FUNERAL MARCH-PROTEST FOR BISHOP OF THE POOR

Last Thursday, October 12, religious leaders and workers and peasants that Bishop Alfredo Ramento served during his lifetime of dedication of the poor marched on Taft Avenue to protest the Bishop's murder.

Bp. Ramento, chair of the Supreme Council of the Iglesia Filipina Indipendiente, was stabbed to death last October 3 by what the police called a robbery-related incident. This obvious fabrication and cover-up on the part of the authorities has outraged the masses in Central Luzon and IFI's laity. Bp. Ramento, a vocal human rights defender and pro-people church leader, has been receiving death threats.

A candle-lighting ceremony ended the day's funeral-protest.

Tributes to Bp. Ramento were held every night the whole of last week, before he was finally cremated last October 13.

The multitude of flames that cry out for justice will continue burning until this reign of terror ends...
